Refrigeration Repairs

Common Faults & Troubleshooting

One of the most crucial appliances in any home is the refrigerator. Gone are the days when we needed to go to the market and get everything fresh because cold storage was non-existent. The humble refrigerator has made it easier to do the shopping less frequently and keep everything fresh and cool for longer. Less waiting in supermarket queues and we can have more food on hand when we want to cook for the family or have a snack. When the refrigerator isn’t working properly, food spoils and drinks are not cool enough. Here are some common issues that you may experience with your refrigerator.

Fridge / Freezer Is Warm

The whole point of a refrigerator is to keep food and drinks cool. If it’s not cooling, you’ve got a serious problem. Not only do you face the prospect of throwing out a lot of spoiled food, who wants to drink a warm beer on a hot summer’s day?

What You Can Do

  • Make sure your refrigerator is properly plugged in
  • Check your circuit box to ensure the switch has not flipped

Leave It For The Experts

  • A refrigerator that does not cool can have several hidden issues. Rather than poke around aimlessly, call 020 3600 1130 and have our engineers check them for you. It could be a dirty condenser coil or the evaporator fan could be broken. Both of these are best left for an expert.

Refrigerator Is Noisier Than It Should Be

A noisy refrigerator is usually a symptom of a bigger problem. It can also be annoyingly distracting. If your refrigerator is driving you insane, there are some minor things you can try.

What You Can Do

  • Check the refrigerator’s drain pan. Clean it if necessary. An overloaded drain pan can inhibit the condensation from dripping as it should.
  • Check that your refrigerator is level. If your refrigerator is not level, it may force some elements to work harder and this will produce more noise

Leave It For The Experts

  • A noisy refrigerator is usually a sign of a bigger issue that needs to be fixed. It could be a faulty condenser or evaporator fan, or the compressor mounts may need to be checked. These are best left for our engineers, so call 020 3600 1130 and arrange a time with us fast.

Refrigerator Smells

One of the main culprits of a smelly refrigerator is rotting food. Your spring-cleaning schedule should always include your refrigerator but there are other things you can do.

What You Can Do

  • Throw out any food that has spoiled
  • Clean your recreator with a cleaning product specially formulated for refrigerators or make a solution of warm water and baking soda

Leave It For The Experts

  • Your refrigerator door seals good be worn. Our engineers are on hand to replace these for you.
  • You could also have an issue with wet insulation or breaker strips. These are best left for the experts.

Refrigerator Runs Without Stopping

Your refrigerator has a built-in thermostat that controls the level of cooling that goes on with your fridge. It runs the motor if the temperature inside the fridge gets higher than you’ve set it and stops once the desired temperature is achieved.

What You Can Do

  • Check the door seals. Remove any debris that has become lodge in the creases.
  • Defrost your freezer. A build-up of ice can affect the temperature of your refrigerator.
  • Test the door switch to ensure it is working properly. If you’re not sure, leave it for the experts.

Leave It For The Experts

  • Condenser coils, door seals and switches are all fiddly parts to deal with so call 020 3600 1130 and have one of our engineers check these for you. If anything needs to be replaced, our engineer usually has many of these parts in stock in his service vehicle.

Freezer Has A Thick Layer Of Ice

No one like to defrost a freezer and fortunately, most modern refrigerator/freezer combos have an automatic defrost feature. If you’ve barely managed to pry open the freezer and are met with a thick layer of solid ice, you need to act fast.

What You Can Do

  • Turn off your freezer and let it defrost. Once the ice comes off, give the freezer a thorough cleaning.
  • Once this is done, turn on your appliance again and test the defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and the defrost timer. Also, check the cooling setting of your refrigerator. You’d be surprised how many times a member of the household has unwittingly turned the cooling of the unit up too high.

Leave It For The Experts

  • If you’re not sure of where your defrost thermostat, heater or timer are located, or what they should be set at, call 020 3600 1130 and let our engineers check all of these for you.
  • Occasionally, the ice can build up around the fan. The fan can’t circulate air and ice can build up faster than usual. The screen will need to be removed and the ice defrosted. This is best left to the experts.

Refrigerator Is Leaking

You wake up in the middle of the night to have a drink and you find yourself standing before your fridge in a pool of icy cold water. Once you get over the shock of this rude awakening, some things need to be done.

What You Can Do

  • Check the drain pan. Clean it if necessary.
  • Check the power connection to ensure your refrigerator is working. If it has stopped working, it may be defrosting and this will result in water inside and outside of your fridge.

Leave it For The Experts

  • If the water is coming from inside the fridge, you may have a blocked drain tube. Our engineers can check this for you and remove the source of the blockage.
  • If your refrigerator has an ice-maker, the water supply hose needs to be checked. It may be allowing more water than necessary into your refrigerator and this needs to be fixed.
